Springmoor Celebrates the Holidays Safely

Safe Holidays at Springmoor

This holiday season, like the rest of 2020, will be far from typical. Many across the country have experienced great hardship and personal loss as a result of the pandemic. After a long year of mask-wearing, social distancing, and disruptions to our normal routines, we could all benefit from some holiday cheer!

The wide range of events and activities we offer at Springmoor is proceeding this December with appropriate precautions in place. We remain steadfast in our commitment to following all recommended safety guidelines to help ensure that our residents and staff stay healthy.

While wearing masks and observing social distancing, we’re gathering in groups of up to 10. Many of our events are also live-streamed for those who don’t feel comfortable with groups of any size.

“We have a very full calendar of holiday entertainment and activities for residents to choose from,” says Beth Holden, Director of Sales and Marketing. “We’re grateful for our supportive and resilient community, and we’re making the most of the season.”

December started off with a bang, with festive decorations being installed around the Springmoor campus. We’ll hold Christmas Tree Lightings at both North and South Village in early December in the afternoon. Residents will enjoy light refreshments as they get into the holiday spirit.

Adapting To Provide Safe, Festive Activities During the Pandemic

The pandemic prevents us from holding our usual holiday gala that includes a formal sit-down dinner, but we’ve adapted. Dining Services is teaming up with the Activities Department to offer a week of fun, socially-distanced events with delicious food and drink.

The tree lighting ceremonies will be followed by Pictures with Santa on Tuesday the 8th, and dining services will deliver homemade mini fruitcake loaves to residents’ doors on Wednesday.

Members of our community are invited to a Gingerbread Social on Thursday the 10th. You can be certain that treats featuring nutmeg, cinnamon, and (of course!) ginger will be plentiful.

Our new Executive Chef, J.P. Murcia, and the rest of the food services department will serve delectable drinks and hors d’oeuvres throughout the community during our Reindeer Romp party on Friday the 11th. Residents are invited to visit multiple areas of our campus in small, socially-distanced groups.

Special foods are one of the things that many of us look forward to most about this time of year. Because it’s important not to overdo it, however, the Springmoor Dietitians will host a tea and answer questions about healthy eating.

Tea will be held in both the North Village Grill and the South Village Terrace Room on December 16. Our dietitians will discuss making meal choices that support your well-being and provide sound nutritional advice to use on a daily basis.

Offering Diverse Ways to Celebrate the Season

On the first four Tuesdays of the month, residents can enjoy an evening concert by North Carolina Symphony Harpist Anita Burroughs-Price. A graduate of Furman and Yale, Anita will delight us with the cascading sounds of the pedal harp. Her recitals often include harps from around the globe as well.

Other opportunities for live music during the month will be presented by Jim Laing, keyboard player extraordinaire, who will play solo on December 3rd and 17th. Jim and the other half of Backfence Duo, Tom DeVito, will help us make merry with popular music from the 1930s–1980s on the 10th.

In addition to our traditional Christmas Candlelight Vespers Service on the 20th, our chaplains will lead a group of residents through a four-session Advent Bible Study. Using the lyrics from scripture and the beloved hymn “O, Holy Night,” we’ll examine traditional Advent topics such as hope, peace, joy, and love. Like Vespers, Advent Bible Study will be live-streamed on Springmoor’s closed-circuit TV channel.

We are an inclusive, welcoming community, and our Jewish residents will be celebrating Hanukkah from December 10th through the 18th. Springmoor’s two ordained chaplains are called to be interfaith. Vespers has always been interfaith, and rabbis often speak at these weekly services.

Rounding out our December events and activities calendar are Christmas-themed Bingo and the opportunity to share your favorite Christmas stories with other residents. Of course perennial favorites like movies in the Auditorium, multiple live and virtual exercise classes, our Connections Discussion Groups, and so much more are also available throughout the month.

Despite the many challenges this year has presented, we’ve welcomed more than 60 new residents to our vibrant community. This number remained constant from 2019, and Springmoor also maintained a 95% occupancy rate.

A CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community), Springmoor offers you a safe, secure, environment where residents live active, independent lives. CCRCs are maintaining higher occupancy rates during the pandemic than other types of senior living communities.
