Springmoor Donates 50 Blankets to Local Charity

Warm and Toasty holiday event

The Warm and Toasty holiday event was held early last December on Springmoor’s beautiful campus. Prospective residents were invited to attend this gathering as a way to meet other people on the Springmoor guest list. They enjoyed music, delicious food, a crackling warm fire, and fun conversation with new friends and their family members.
As a way to give back to the surrounding community, Springmoor purchased a blanket in honor of each attendee to give to those who would need them most this winter. This past week, on a blistery cold winter morning, 50 fleece blankets were donated to The Clothing Ministry at The First Baptist Church in downtown Raleigh.

Our residents requested the help of Bill Kibler, a Springmoor resident and 29-year volunteer at The Clothing Ministry, for the blanket donations. Bill’s truck is known around Springmoor as the best way to donate gently used clothing, coats, blankets, and hats because of his well-known volunteer work with the ministry. It now serves over 1,000 Wake County Residents each month.

In the beginning, the downtown churches realized they were each trying to serve those in need in similar ways. By joining together and focusing their efforts on only one aspect of the community’s needs, they would be able to make a bigger impact. Now there is a soup kitchen at The Church of the Good Shepherd, a “Love ‘Em Through Linens” ministry run by Tabernacle Baptist Church at The First Presbyterian Church, food donations distributed by Sacred Heart Cathedral, volunteers from Edenton Street Methodist, and other neighboring churches that send help to each ministry to assist with the daily activities.

The Clothing Ministry has 80 volunteers that serve on a rotating basis each week, many of whom are Springmoor residents, like Bill, who are eager to help. With financial donations from church members and other Wake County residents, the group serves over 60 families a week. Each family member is offered 2 to 3 outfits, new socks, and underwear every other month. During the winter months, they also receive hats, gloves, and coats.

Each Monday morning, a group of volunteers arrive to go through the weekly donation room to sort bags and boxes of clothing. Everything is inspected, hung on hangers and then added to the large fellowship hall that has now become The Clothing Ministry shopping area. Thanks to monetary donations, new steel-toed boots, underwear, workpants and toiletries are purchased and packaged also. Off-season clothing is sorted and stored for future shopping.

Many Springmoor residents enjoy giving their time to local organizations, charities, and churches like this one, and always encourage their fellow residents to join them. The blankets donated this week from the Warm and Toasty event will be distributed to those in the most need throughout Wake County.
If you see Bill’s truck, know that he too, is happy to take your donations downtown. He looks forward to his 30th year as a volunteer and of course, welcomes your participation too!
