Laughter is the Best Medicine
“I believe that if people can get more laughter in their lives, they are a lot better off,” says Steve Wilson, MA, CSP, a psychologist and laugh therapist. “They might be healthier too.”
Springmoor residents have obviously heard about the therapeutic effects of laughter! This room in North Village is filled with laughter, Ping Pong balls and cheers every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning. The East and West resident teams battle it out with their quick serves, smashing volleys, and quick wit.
A group of 12 to 15 residents arrive in the morning to play the popular game of Ping Pong. The men were quick to say that the women are always the winners. One gentleman even stated that when he showed up to play his first game, he figured he would take it easy on his female opponents. He was surprised when he realized he should bring his A-game to this group of fierce competitors.
While no real scores are kept at Springmoor, the competition is fun and the camaraderie is excellent. They have recently added Tuesday afternoon matches in South Village.
Ping Pong had its beginning in 1880 when lawn tennis players were looking for a way to bring their game inside. It had its earliest start as a parlor game with British army officers using books for a net and cigar boxes for paddles. The balls were made from rounded corks from wine bottles.
Today, the game is the most popular racquet sport in the world and ranked second overall in terms of participation. There are over 10 million players that compete in sanctioned tournaments each year.
The jabs and jokes make the morning routine a great way to start any day:
“That net is too high!”
“Something’s wrong with this paddle!”
“You gotta give it to me for trying!”
The group was quick to point out that one member is a gold medalist in the State Senior Games. He and his mix-doubles partner won the tournament last year and he received the silver medal in singles!
After the match was over this morning, the group stayed for another hour of exercise with our Wellness Center instructor, Lynn. They were warmed up and ready to work-out another set of muscles in their routine.
Walking, swimming or bike riding, this sport, like no other, gives participants Joe, Lois, Carl, Bob, Sally, Don, Elise, Dale, Lorine, and Billie their morning dose of laughter, lots of pedometer steps, and plenty of swinging. Join them next week, if not for a game, for a laugh or two from the bleachers.
