On The Road

The Transportation Team at Springmoor is always happy to take you where you need to go. Our five Springmoor drivers can be found all over the county taking residents to medical appointments, the grocery store or to the North Carolina Symphony at Meymandi Concert Hall. They drive residents across campus or across the county. Transportation is available for our residents for all of our Pathways activities and for doctor’s visits. Our cars and buses are on the road every day of the week.

Across Campus

Jim Woody has been driving for Springmoor for the past ten years. He knows everyone’s name and works every Monday through Friday, including holidays. Retiring a few times in his career, Jim can’t stay away for long. He loves to be busy! He will tell you that he drives 35 miles a day and never goes anywhere. To the residents, he goes everywhere! He starts the day cleaning the car and washing the windows. Afterwards, he sits down with a highlighter to plan his day. A schedule of on-campus physical therapy appointments, doctor’s appointments and Springmoor events is given to him each morning. The movie theatre, Aqua Fit and the Tai Chi classes in South Village always mean he will be on the go – back and forth across the campus many times. Jim is quick to open and close the car door for each resident. He helps load your belongings and carry them inside if needed. The pride he takes in his retirement job is much appreciated by everyone at Springmoor!

Medical Appointments

Vanessa Gray, Calvin Morrison, Ivor Amartey and Brenda Clark complete the transportation team. The four of them are also given a daily schedule and drive residents to off-campus doctors, dentists and other medical specialists every day. Some Raleigh residents in independent living prefer to stay with their own doctors after their move to Springmoor. For a well-being check or an inpatient procedure, our team will get you there. If you have a business appointment, our team can take you there too. Transportation is provided at no cost for medical appointments. An hourly fee is charged for other professional appointments.

Shopping

Raleigh has a grocery store for most any shopping style. Lidl, Harris Teeter, Trader Joes and Food Lion are just a few of the many options for Raleigh shoppers. The Convenience Store at Springmoor stocks many of the items that residents may need. However, the freezer items and fresh produce are the must haves on the grocery store trips. Fresh fruit and ice cream are the items most often being purchased by those that go on the weekly grocery run. Harris Teeter is a five-minute ride away and on the Pathways schedule every Thursday morning.
If the mall is your favorite place, Raleigh offers Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Belk, Talbots, Jos A. Bank and many smaller boutique stores. The Pathways calendar has a Shopping Spree trip scheduled twice each month. A trip to the Tanger Outlet Malls in Smithfield and Mebane are often on the list too. Door to door service makes it easy to get in and out with all of your packages! Shopping for the holidays and not having to maneuver through busy traffic or find a parking place is an extra benefit of taking the Springmoor bus.

Cultural Events

Springmoor residents can enjoy the ease of a going to the NC Symphony, Carolina Ballet and The Raleigh Little Theatre with our drivers too. A representative from each organization is on campus every spring to sell season tickets to Springmoor residents for these events. Signing up for transportation makes it even better.
Our drivers also have scheduled trips to the Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI) on the campus of NC State University. Our residents choose the classes to participate in each semester. Brenda likes taking the group on this trip. Formerly a CAT bus driver for the City of Raleigh and a Wolfline driver at NC State, she knows the campus well. She has driven many groups of people but says the Springmoor group is her favorite because everyone is so happy.

Day Trips

This month Vanessa and Brenda will take our residents to Virginia to see the D-Day Memorial in Bedford. They will take them to the Waterfowl Park in Scotland Neck, the Aloha Safari Zoo in Cameron and to the Temple Theatre in Sanford to name just a few. Lunch or dinner is always included on a day trip. And if it’s an early morning departure, the dining staff bakes everyone’s favorite biscuits to take along for the ride.

Out to Eat

Lunch and Dinner Outings are planned each month. Residents help choose the restaurants. Sometimes it’s an old favorite and sometimes it’s something new. Driftwood Southern Kitchen in Lafayette Village, just north of Springmoor, is on the list this month. A tour of the Angus Barn’s wine cellar and dinner were on the list last month. What’s more fun than a lunch date with a group of friends and neighbors? No one has to worry about the beltline traffic issues. If it’s raining or cold, the door-to-door convenience is even better!

Dining and Doctors

Calvin and Ivor are here to take you to a scheduled appointment with your doctor. Simply make a reservation with transportation and they will pick you up and bring you home (as far as Duke and Chapel Hill!). Brenda and Vanessa will be here when it’s time for shopping, theatre or an out-to-dinner event. And Jim is here to take you across campus to a movie, to an on-campus PT appointment, to an exercise class or to a committee meeting. Our 42-acre campus has him driving back and forth and around the circle many times a day. He has retired a few times but much prefers, like all of our driving team, to take you where you want to go!
