Pathways Presents…Hearing Loss
April 18, 2018 - 2:30 pm
The program will provide consumer focused information about making the most of your hearing through technology and strategies. We’ll cover communication tips, hearing aids, Cochlear Implants and assistive technology. The goal is to help you hear your best in any situation and avoid the denial and isolation that often results from hearing loss.
Steve Barber, our HLAA Speaker, has been a volunteer with Hearing Loss Association of America for almost 25 years. HLAA is the nation’s largest non-profit organization for people with hearing loss. During that time, he has served as President for HLAA-Wake Chapter, and for the HLAA-NC State Association for several years. He built and manages the HLAA-NC Web pages that support all the HLAA chapters in NC. During the 1990’s he was a member of the North Carolina Council for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing and served for 4 of those years as its chairperson.
Steve gradually lost his hearing starting in his mid-30’s. By the time he was 65 he was functionally deaf, and had a Cochlear Implant (CI) that has restored most of his hearing.
He credits HLAA with giving him the information to help him effectively use hearing aids, assistive listening options and strategies that allowed him to hear his best as his hearing declined and as he learned to hear again with the CI.
Steve is retired from IBM and now works for SAS Institute as a software tester … something that might not have been possible without the skills he gained through HLAA.
