What to Expect on Move-In Day

You’ve sorted, thrown-away, donated, downsized and packed. All of your kitchen items are in boxes, your clothing is neatly sorted and hanging in wardrobe boxes. Your furniture is ready to be put on the moving truck. Move-in day typically starts at 8:00 in the morning. The crew arrives early to load your belongings into the moving van and deliver everything to your new Springmoor address.

Packing and Preparations

The months prior to the move are filled with anticipation, paperwork, decision- making and so much more. Springmoor residents, Allen and Barbara Page, tell us the decision to move is just the first of many decisions. They felt this decision was a gift to their children. Cleaning out their lifetime home and making their own choices was helpful to the entire family. They were able to choose items to take with them and choose items with sentimental value to give to their children and grandchildren. The simplicity they feel now is wonderful.
Springmoor residents, Michael and Ellen Rogers, recently made the move from Oregon. It was a 3,000-mile journey across the country. The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area came up on top of many of their lists of requirements for retirement. The journey was much different from those driving across town, the preparations took longer and the move-in day became a move-in month. Now that they are here, they can’t say enough about the helpful staff and super-friendly neighbors that have offered to help while their belongings were in route.

The day of the move is always filled with excitement and first-day jitters. The moving truck is packed by noon. Your car is loaded with the breakables. Your friends’ and families’ cars have a few more last minute items. Everyone takes a much-needed break for lunch before the second half of the day begins.
The truck pulls into the loading zone closest to your new home at Springmoor. The crew, ready for the second phase of the move, has taken a break, had lunch and ready to begin the unloading. You have been given a floor plan with furniture templates, measured a few times and carefully marked where the furniture will be placed. The marketing team at Springmoor has helped with this step over the past few months as your apartment was being renovated to your specifications. You may have even come back a time or two to take a second look as you place each piece of furniture. A completed floor plan makes it easy for the crew to unload and place things where you have imagined them.

Specialists

Senior Move Specialists are also great resources for packing, sorting and designing a floor plan. The knowledge they provide is priceless. Knowing exactly how many plates, pots and pans, linens and lamps to bring has come from years of packing and unpacking Springmoor residents. When deciding exactly which chair or which table to bring, they can easily answer the questions for you. They will measure your furniture, measure your new home, pack your belongings and take away your items to be donated. Pat and David Waters moved to Springmoor in March and told us they used a specialist to help. “At the end of the move-in day, 95% of our belongings were in place and have not been changed or moved again. The specialists did all the planning, packing, unpacking, kitchen and bath organization for us and even took care of the donation pick-up from our house the following day.” She said it couldn’t have been easier with their assistance. On the day after the move, they will come back to your previous home to do the last minute clean up. Another team will come to your new home to help hang pictures and add the finishing touches.

Friends and Family

If you have friends and family to help pack and unpack, the daily schedule is very similar. After the truck is packed, our Bistro and Garden Café are perfect spots for a light lunch when you arrive on campus. After the unpacking is complete, our maintenance department will come by to help hang your pictures and towel bars. They will help program your TV remote and make other adjustments as needed. The empty boxes are placed in the hallway and the Springmoor maintenance crew will take them to the recycling bins.

Welcome

As you begin placing your items in their new spots, your new neighbors will pop in to say hello. The welcome you will receive is one of the highlights of the day! The Waters said they felt “at home” from the very first day and the feeling has continued since their early spring move-in. Everyone at Springmoor has been through the first day anticipation, the month or two of packing and sorting, the physical exhaustion and the long list of learning where everything is on campus. They know better than anyone how you are feeling. The first visit is usually a simple hello. They may leave their phone number and point you in the direction of dining. They may answer a few questions and promise to come back in a day or two. If you need them, you know they will be there. If you want to quietly unpack and take a nap, you can do that too.
The Welcome Committee will also welcome you to Springmoor. They will invite you to dinner and introduce you to new friends. They will suggest activities to get involved in and pass your name along to others with similar interests. Your extended family will begin to grow as soon as you arrive at Springmoor. After the first few days, the Pages said, “Springmoor has the nicest people we may have ever met. There are people here who have had fascinating lives and incredible careers. People who can tell stories of lives well lived.” Meeting new friends and neighbors has become one of their favorite activities.

First Week

Move-in day is filled with excitement and jitters, exhaustion and anticipation, questions and more questions but the first week brings calm and order. Once the boxes are unpacked, the pictures are hung on the wall and you have successfully navigated the dining room, you will wonder why you didn’t make this move sooner!
Housekeeping will be there to clean your home once a week. Maintenance is only a phone call away when you need a quick repair. Exercise classes and equipment are a short walk from your apartment. A quick trip to pick up a few grocery items, mail a letter or visit the bank is just down the hall. Need to ask a nurse or doctor a question? That’s easy. They are on campus too.
